I took a few hours yesterday to visit Arlington National Cemetery and pay my respects to all those who have given their lives for our country. It’s always a humbling experience.

I decided to get prints made of a few of my favorite images from my adventures and I am now selling prints over on Etsy. Just a few details for anyone planning a trip to this part of the world.

Accommodations:

I stayed at Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun (which is actually in Playa del Carmen). It was a lovely little all inclusive resort. Not too big, not too small. The room was nice and they serviced it 3x a day with turn down service at night. They left a pink rose on my pillow each night. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. I’d stay here again, but wouldn’t mind checking out other places. The only draw back was that the while the beach was lovely, it was very tiny (thin) due to erosion from recent storms.

Activities:

Tulum Mayan Ruins - I took a day trip to the ruins at Tulum and the setting is just amazing — perched up on sea cliffs over looking the turquoise blue water. One of my Chinese friends commented, “I think the Mayans understood Feng Shui…it’s heaven on earth”. You can’t get too close to the ruins as they are roped off due to past vandalism. It’s unfortunate that a few ruin it for the rest of us. The earlier you can arrive here the better, crowds get bigger midday.

Akumal – I was also able to visit a very lovely beach, Akumal (“the place of the turtles” in Mayan), where you can swim out to the nearby reef and snorkel along side endangered green sea turtles and many tropical fish. Due to the high winds and currents that day we were unable to snorkel there (next time!). Instead, we snorkeled in a nearby protected lagoon, Yal Ku. It was lovely and we saw lots of beautiful fish, two rays and one lonely sea turtle.

For next time:

I hope to do more snorkeling/diving and visit Chichen Itza (3 hour drive from Cancun), Coba (the tallest structure you can climb at 120 steps and the site where they found the stela that prophetized the December 21, 2012 apolcalypse) and swim in one of the Cenotes.
